An estimated 6.9 million dogs are currently kept as pets in Germany. Not surprisingly, therefore, they are common patients in veterinary practice. Aside from treating dogs when they are ill, the veterinary practitioner plays an important role in disease and zoonosis prevention. For example, owners should be encouraged to follow the vaccine recommendations of the German Standing Committee on Veterinary Vaccination (StlKoVet) and to draw up an individual vaccination and worming plan together with their vet.
